Israeli-Palestinian peace talks to resume this week in Washington

WASHINGTON/JERUSALEM: Israeli and Palestinian negotiators have been invited to resume peace talks in Washington on Monday and Tuesday, the US state department said, after a break of nearly three years.

The latest diplomatic push follows months of intense shuttle diplomacy by US secretary of state John Kerry who said a week ago the groundwork had been laid for a breakthrough, while setting no specific date for talks to restart.

"Today Kerry spoke with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu and personally extended an invitation to send senior negotiating teams to Washington to formally resume direct final status negotiations," state department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement on Sunday.

"Initial meetings are planned for the evening of Monday July 29 and Tuesday July 30," she said.

Nabil Abu Rdaineh, a senior aide to Abbas, who was in Amman, said the Palestinian leader had received Kerry's invitation there from the US ambassador to Jordan and that his negotiating team would be in Washington on Monday.

Israeli negotiators were set to fly to Washington late on Sunday, a government official said.

The US-sponsored talks broke down in late 2010 in a dispute over Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank, which Palestinians say denies them a viable state.

Netanyahu's cabinet cleared the way earlier on Sunday for the renewal of the talks by approving the release of 104 Palestinian prisoners.

Thirteen ministers voted in favour of the release, seven voted against and two abstained, a government official said.

"The cabinet has authorised the opening of diplomatic talks between Israel and the Palestinians," said a statement issued by the prime minister's office.

Netanyahu had urged divided rightists in his cabinet to back the prisoner deal.

"This moment is not easy for me, is not easy for the cabinet ministers, and is not easy especially for the bereaved families, whose feelings I understand," he said when the cabinet met, referring to families who have lost members in militant attacks.

"But there are moments in which tough decisions must be made for the good of the nation and this is one of those moments."

Prisoner release

Justice minister Tzipi Livni, who is set to head Israel's negotiation team and will be accompanied by Netanyahu confidant Yitzhak Molcho, told her cabinet colleagues that resuming talks with the Palestinians was a vital national interest.

"Today's cabinet decision is one of the most important for the future of Israel ... Starting a (peace) process is in Israel's security and strategic interests," Livni said.

Abbas has demanded the release of prisoners held since before a 1993 interim peace accord took effect. Israel has jailed thousands more Palestinians since then, many for carrying out deadly attacks.

The prisoner release would allow Netanyahu to sidestep other Palestinian demands, such as a halt to Jewish settlement expansion and a guarantee that negotiations over borders will be based on boundaries from before the 1967 Middle East war, when Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem.

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat, who will be accompanied to Washington by Mohammed Ishtyeh, an Abbas aide, welcomed Israel's decision, which he said had come 14 years late. He pledged to work to free all prisoners held by Israel.

"This Israeli cabinet decision is an overdue step towards the implementation of the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement of 1999," he said in a statement. "We call on Israel to seize the opportunity ... to put an end to decades of occupation and exile and to start a new stage of justice, freedom and peace for Israel, Palestine and the rest of the region."

In any future peace deal, Israel wants to keep several settlement blocs and East Jerusalem, which it annexed as part of its capital in a move never recognised internationally.

Hundreds of protesters from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) staged a rally against the resumption of peace talks, clashing with police in the West Bank city of Ramallah, the seat of Abbas's Palestinian Authority.

PFLP activists also demonstrated in Gaza and chanted: "Listen Abbas, our land is not for sale... The (Palestinian) cause will never be resolved except by the rifle."

Appealing for support on his Facebook page on Saturday, Netanyahu said the inmates would be freed in groups only after the start of talks, expected to last at least nine months.

Israeli Channel 1 television said prisoners would be released in three stages, depending on progress in the talks, with a group who are Israeli citizens left until the last stage.

The 22-member cabinet also discussed legislation that would require a referendum on any statehood deal reached with the Palestinians involving a withdrawal from land Israel captured in the 1967 war. It will be sent for parliamentary debate shortly.

Before the cabinet meeting, Netanyahu told ministers from his Likud party that Israel would pay a price if peace talks did not resume, according to one official who was there.

Texas turtle with 2 heads crawls into hearts, Facebook

Published: Sunday, July 28, 2013, 5:39?p.m.
Updated 6 hours ago

SAN ANTONIO ? A two-headed turtle born last month at the San Antonio Zoo has become so popular her keepers started a Facebook page for her, the San Antonio Express reported.

?We get inquires from people wanting to know how they're doing,? said zoo spokeswoman Debbie Rios-Vanskike, who gets calls and emails from around the world about the two-headed Texas cooter, named Thelma and Louise.

While uncommon, two-headed turtles occasionally hatch as a result of twin embryos that didn't fully separate. So far, it appears that Thelma and Louise, born on June 18, are completely healthy.

?They are doing amazing,? Rios-Vanskike said. ?They're eating. They're getting along. They're swimming together. There are no signs that there's anything wrong with them.?

The Facebook page on Sunday listed Thelma and Louise as a single female who attended the ?University of Turtledome.? Favorite bands include the Turtles.

Glenn Beck: The $1 bill proves America was founded to help Israel exist

In an odd rant about the secret symbolism on the $1 bill, right-wing conspiracy theorist Glenn Beck told an audience on Wednesday that America?s founders established the country so that conservative Christians could help the nation of Israel come into being nearly 200 years later. ?But that?s not all!? Beck declared. ?If you also see, and if you look at it in color, you will notice there is a white ring around that. And then a yellow ring. The white ring looks almost like clouds ? because it is! The cloud that led the people of Israel out during the day and the yellow ring represents the fire.?

Google introduces Chromecast, a $35 HDMI streaming solution for televisions (video)

Google introduces Chromekey, an HDMI streaming device for televisions

Google's Chromecast is Mountain View's next foray into the television market. In brief, it's a $35 HDMI dongle that mirrors content being played nearby on a tablet, smartphone or computer. Hrm, that sounds familiar. The 2-inch device runs "a simplified version of Chrome OS" and requires separate USB power; connect it to your local WiFi network and similarly connected devices work with Chromecast. It can be ordered right now on Google Play and will apparently ship in one to two days. Of note, the device seems US-only for now, as our UK colleagues are showing a "not available in your country" prompt. Early buyers get three months of free Netflix with the purchase. Additionally, it's also heading to retail (read: Best Buy) on July 28th. Google ended its presentation with a quick word that Chromecast functionality will eventually come embedded in various other devices, and that it's working on getting other countries access "as quickly as possible." No specs were given during the presentation, but its Google Play page lists the device as HDMI-CEC compatible, and it uses 2.4GHz 801.11 b/g/n WiFi. Given the separate USB power required, the $35 nets you a Chromecast device, an HDMI extended, a USB power cable and a separate power adapter.

Apps that work with the device include a "Cast" button that allows users to push video to their televisions and control various aspects remotely (volume, play, pause, etc.). "Once Chromecast is plugged in, you just go to YouTube on your smartphone," Google reps said. "You'll see the cast button in your UI and you press it -- Chromecast will pull the info you requested from the cloud and play it on your TV." Meanwhile, an on-stage demonstration showed YouTube video being pushed "via the cloud," thus enabling other apps to be used while a video is being viewed on a television screen. Netflix was up next, and it has similar remote control functionality. Google Play movies and television (expectedly) also work with Chromecast, and Google delightedly demonstrated it with Vin Diesel vehicle Fast Five. Finally, Google demoed full Google Chrome projected on a TV and controlled remotely with a "standard $500 Windows 8 laptop." The feature is "still in early days," but a promise has already been made: that users will be able to easily project content to televisions via their web browser.

Update: We've added Chromecast's first commercial (which demonstrates much of the device's functionality) just after the break, and a source link with Google's formal announcement.

Using Restylane to Change Your Appearance ... - womens interests

While I haven't been bold enough to try Botox and other cosmetic treatments, I have done extensive research and found interesting facts about Restylane. Have you heard about it? Well, it has been around for a while, but apparently hasn't gotten the popularity that Botox and others have gotten. However, women who have the treatment done have commented that it has helped. I am not endorsing anything here, but choose to provide the information that I have discovered so that you can make the right choice for your own personal gain.

Women, as they grow older, will definitely notice the signs of inevitable aging. Some of this is due to laugh lines and worry lines. When your skin starts to show less elasticity, you will see a loss in smoothness and you no longer look as youthful. This means that you may need a proven method of revitalizing your skin without the stress of surgery and restylane may be the answer.

What is Restylane?
This is a derma-filling agent cosmetically and primarily used on a woman's face. It is manufactured using hyaluronic acid, which is a natural element found in the skin. It is used by plastic surgeons to plump up your skin or lift the face to make it look fuller. Sun and other elements of nature will damage the skin. Naturally aging makes the skin lose its collagen and that is when you will see the sagging, the lines and the wrinkles. Of course, many women opt for anti-aging creams, exfoliators, firming creams, and moisturizers used on a nightly basis, but how do you know which one will work for your skin? You would have to see a beauty consultant and some women don't want to spend the money or the time to wait for something to happen. They would rather go the faster route with Restylane.

If you consistently use the beauty products that compliment your skin, you may see results before long. However, if you decide to do the Restylane treatment, the surgeon will inject certain areas of the skin to fill in the features that are sunken. You can use the treatment to enlarge the lips, get rid of the wrinkles and restore the plumpness in your hollow cheeks.

Restylane cost about $500 for each treatment. Are your ready to foot that bill? This is really not a bad price, though, for something so effective. However, the temporary results may last only for a year and then you have to do it all over again. What a woman has to do to look young, right? It is an excellent alternative, though to the bigger price tag of plastic surgery. Be sure to receive treatment from someone who is properly trained and certified.

Conclusion
Youthfulness is a commodity that many of us chase. Nothing is wrong with that as long as it makes you feel good. What is your take on this topic? Would you consider cosmetic surgery? How far will you go? Put your comments below. We want to start a dialogue with you.

The Numerous Reasons for Migraine Headaches - Health and Fitness

Headaches may be terribly debilitating, and it is something most of us have had the misfortune to endure. But needless to say there are headaches, and then you can get migraine headaches which are different. Actually, I used to have migraines when I was really young but they stopped. I no longer have them, but I can tell you they are tremendously painful experiences. There is much to be discovered about migraines because they aren't fully understood by researchers. There are numerous reasons for this not the very least of which is people can experience and feel pain in various ways. But there is much more to this story which is complicated and has many pieces to it.

As you can imagine, there is actually a great deal of information gathered over the years. This kind of headache is occasionally referred to as a vascular headache. For one thing, there are some who can experience a migraine if they're subject to significant temperatures of either hot or cold. Then there are persons who can get this type of headache if they experience substantial sleep loss or too much hunger. Just like with so many other medical problems, there are certain triggers that apparently influence this condition. Stress is a variable with many other men and women, and perhaps particularly if it is prolonged stress.

There continues to be research regarding the special attributes of migraines such as the fact they build more gradually than other headaches. However, that is just an additional clue related to migraines, but each and every piece of the puzzle helps. Every bit of knowledge can offer some kind of clue. There may also be a genetic component involved, however that would not seem to include all migraine sufferers. That does point to other possible causes such as external influences that produce the same effect.

For women, there can be a connection with hormone variations and migraines. In fact, cases of migraines have been noted during the times just before or after the menstrual cycle happens. It is acknowledged that estrogen diminishes quite a bit during those periods of time. Further periods of hormone variations involve menopause and certainly pregnancy. A number of women will likely have a more significant frequency of migraine problems during these periods. It could be useful to note that the treatment known as HRT, hormonal replacement therapy, can make migraines more painful than they already are. Alternatively, all of those experiences do not happen to all women who suffer from migraines.

There are quite a few other variables involved that may result in a migraine including sensory arousal such as loud sounds, particular odors, bright lights and an assortment of smells like perfumes and other various odors. It is distinct that the range of migraine triggers is highly diverse. Still there are physical factors with some people including intense physical exertion of pretty much any kind. So there is still a long way to go before this ailment is understood and properly treated.

Kerry's Folly, Israel's Peril

In one of Team Obama?s trademark Friday afternoon specials, Secretary of State John Kerry announced last week that his six rounds of -252791648shuttle diplomacy had resulted in an agreement to reconvene Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.? As usual, the timing was appropriate for an initiative designed to garner favorable headlines, but that doesn?t stand up to scrutiny.

It appears that Kerry has bought this ?breakthrough? by bullying Israel into making further concessions to its Palestinian enemies, even before the talks begin.? In exchange for nothing more than the Palestinians? agreement-in-principle to resume them, the Israelis will release some number of additional convicted terrorists.? Never mind that the ones left in Israeli jails after numerous previous releases are, by and large, those who have most successfully and murderously attacked innocent civilians in the Jewish State.

If the Israelis once again pay this price, they must expect the same results as before: More hardened criminals unleashed to wage jihad against Israel ? and against any Palestinians that might actually wish to make peace with her.

The rapturous public welcome routinely accorded these terrorists makes clear that it is such war-mongers, not the peace-makers, who are blessed in the radicalized West Bank.? That is even more true in Gaza, where few defy the despotic and virulently anti-Israel dictates of the Muslim Brotherhood?s Palestinian franchise: the designated terrorist organization, Hamas.

For that reason, among many others, notwithstanding Kerry?s ego-driven pursuit of negotiations, his purported ?breakthrough? cannot produce real progress towards a genuine peace.? And inevitably, pressure will begin to mount all over again for further Israeli concessions.

This pattern was evident in the immediate aftermath of the latest Friday afternoon special.? Unidentified Palestinian officials promptly put out the word that Secretary Kerry had, as The Blaze reported, given ?Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas a letter guaranteeing that new peace negotiations with Israel will be based on pre-1967 borders.?

Israeli officials, including prominent politicians in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s ruling coalition, have responded sharply.? They deny any agreement to use as the basis for these talks a return to the indefensible territorial boundaries that have aptly been called ?Auschwitz borders.?? So, the new negotiations may founder before they begin.

But let?s engage in a thought-experiment.? Just for the purpose of discussion, consider what would happen if Israel did agree to surrender territory on the West Bank and Golan Heights that provides a modicum of strategic depth to the otherwise incredibly vulnerable Jewish State?

One need look no further than the emerging correlation of forces arrayed against Israel.? The unmistakable reality is that it is facing the prospect for the first time in a generation of actual or prospective enemies on every side, including potentially devastating attacks from the sea.

O The most populous Arab state, Egypt, is convulsed by domestic unrest and a volatile confrontation between Islamists sworn to destroy Israel and a military that, in the past, has repeatedly tried to do so.? The two nations? cold peace, enforced for decades by a demilitarized Sinai, is jeopardized as that desert peninsula is increasingly populated by al Qaeda and other jihadists itching to attack Israelis.

O Syria is wracked by civil war in which the ultimate victory of either Iranian/Hezbollah-backed Bashir Assad or the Muslim Brotherhood-al Qaeda alliance is likely to pose new threats to the long quiet, but now restive, Golan Heights.? U.S. arming of the so-called ?rebels? may or may not assure their triumph.? But it will surely increase the danger that faction poses to Israel.

O Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq are in various stages of destabilization at the hands of Islamists of assorted stripes.? Turkey is in the hands of a particularly dangerous one, Recep Tayyep Erdogan, who makes no secret of his hostility towards Israel and solidarity with its enemies.? And the Islamic Republic of Iran is continuing to build the capacity to deliver an existential nuclear threat to Israel.

O As the brilliant strategic analyst and author Mark Helprin pointed out in the Wall Street Journal last weekend (), Israel can no longer take comfort in the ?qualitative edge? in conventional armaments that previously enabled it to contend with numerically superior enemies:? ?Saudi Arabia?s air force (soon 380 combat aircraft, primarily F-15s) is rapidly gaining on Israel (441 combat aircraft) in quantity and quality. Were the Saudis to take a Muslim-solidarity time-out with Iran and join Egypt, Syria and perhaps even Turkey to defeat Israel in an air war, it would mean Israel?s death.?

In short, this is no time for the U.S. government to be demanding that its most important, self-reliant and reliable ally in the Middle East make territorial concessions that will render it more vulnerable to attack from one, or more, of the aforementioned quarters.? That is especially so given that such concessions have no prospect of translating into an enduring peace with all, or even most, of the Palestinians.

It is neither in the Israelis? interest nor our own that they weaken themselves further in the face of the region?s burgeoning shariah-driven religio-politico-cultural dynamic, one that is feeding their enemies? unrequited ambition to ?drive the Jews into the sea.?

John Kerry?s vainglorious diplomacy has thus far done nothing to mitigate that dynamic.? If anything, his sympathies and those of President Obama towards the Muslim Brotherhood are feeding it.? We must not permit such folly to continue to intensify Israel?s peril, and our own.

Egypt starts amending constitution despite political divisions

By Maggie Fick and Noah Browning

CAIRO (Reuters) - A panel of legal experts started work on Sunday to revise Egypt's Islamist-tinged constitution, a vital first step on the road to fresh elections ordered by the army following its removal of Mohamed Mursi as president.

Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood, which has accused the army of orchestrating a military coup and denounced plans to revise the constitution, staged fresh rallies on Sunday to maintain pressure on the new, interim government.

Setting a highly ambitious timeframe, the military wants new elections in around six months and has tasked a panel of 10 legal experts to present proposed changes to the constitution within 30 days for review before a broader-based body.

The original constitution was approved by a referendum last year, but critics said the text failed to protect human rights, minorities and social justice.

Ali Awad Saleh, a judge and the constitutional affairs adviser for the newly installed president, chaired Sunday's panel, saying it would spend the next week receiving ideas from "citizens, political parties, and all sides".

Khaled Dawoud, a spokesman for the National Salvation Front, Egypt's main secular political alliance, called the start of the committee's work "a very positive development".

The Muslim Brotherhood has shown no sign it is ready to engage with the new administration or the army, sticking firmly to its demand for the full restoration of Mursi, who has been held in an undisclosed location since his downfall on July 3.

Army and judiciary sources denied a report in state-run Al-Ahram newspaper's early Monday edition that the public prosecutor had ordered the arrest of Mursi for 15 days pending an investigation into charges of spying and inciting violence.

A few thousand women, children and men marched from the site of a round-the-clock, pro-Mursi vigil in a Cairo suburb on Sunday, moving to within sight of the defense ministry, ringed by barbed wire and protected by well-armed soldiers.

"Why, Sisi why, why did you kill our sisters?" the crowd chanted, referring to General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the defense minister who played a central role in forcing Mursi from office following mammoth street protests against the Islamist ruler.

More than 100 people have died in violent clashes this month, including three women taking part in a pro-Mursi rally in the Nile Delta town of Mansoura on Friday.

CONSTITUTIONAL DOUBTS

Trying to burnish their democratic credentials, the Egyptian military has said the new constitution should be put to a referendum before planned parliamentary elections.

However, some analysts have expressed doubts about rushing to revise the text given the lack of political consensus that has clouded Egypt's faltering transition to democracy in the wake of the 2011 removal of veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

"The problem is not amending or drafting the constitution, the problem is deciding the direction the country is headed," said Zaid Al-Ali of International IDEA, a Stockholm-based intergovernmental organization.

"Unless political agreement is reached between all of the major political actors in the country, we are going to head from one crisis to another," he said.

Despite the continued domestic tensions, the new government is trying to show the world that business is returning to normal in Cairo. On Sunday, the cabinet held its first meeting since being sworn into office last week.

"The people need to be informed candidly about the size of Egypt's problems, which require quick and decisive action," said a statement issued at the end of the gathering.

Egypt's finances are floundering: the budget deficit has widened to almost half of all state spending and foreign reserves totaled just $14.9 billion in June - representing less than three months of imports that the International Monetary Fund considers to be a minimum safe cushion.

Some of Egypt's Arab allies welcome Mursi's demise and have rushed to prop up the nation's coffers, however.

Egypt's central bank said on Sunday it had received $2 billion in funds from Saudi Arabia, the latest installment of a $12 billion aid package pledged by Gulf Arab states.

The Egyptian stock exchange rose to a seven-week high on Sunday, encouraged by a lack of violence at weekend "anti-coup" protests in Cairo, hoping it indicated tensions are calming.

However, violence continued in the lawless Sinai peninsula, where three members of Egypt's security forces were killed on Sunday by armed men - the latest in a string of attacks blamed on Islamist militants opposed to the army.

Mursi was Egypt's first freely elected leader, but during his one year in office he drew criticism for failing to revive the ailing economy, restore security or build institutions. The Muslim Brotherhood say they were repeatedly thwarted by remnants of Mubarak's old government and forces hostile to them.

BROWNSTOWN

It didn?t take long to get a response from Chayse Shell and Jared Adkins when asked about their favorite part of football.

?I like the passing,? said Adkins, a fifth-grader.

?I like how you get the ball and you get to run to the end zone without getting tackled or anything,? said Shell, a sixth-grader.

Last week, the annual 56er football camp took place at Brownstown Central High School for fifth- and sixth-graders, and the seventh- and eighth-graders went through camp at Brownstown Central Middle School. On Friday, 56er camp culminated with a punt, pass and kick competition, and the seventh- and eighth-grade boys scrimmaged.

UK investigators: Disable locator beacon on 787s

LONDON (AP) ? U.K. air accident investigators are recommending that all Honeywell emergency transmitters should be temporarily disabled on Boeing 787s following a fire last week at London's Heathrow Airport.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch said Thursday that the greatest damage to the parked Ethiopian Airlines Dreamliner occurred in the vicinity of the aircraft's emergency locator transmitter.

Investigators said it was not clear if the fire was caused by the transmitter's batteries or a short near or around the transmitter, but recommended that the Federal Aviation Administration disable Honeywell's transmitters in Boeing 787s "until appropriate airworthiness actions" can be carried out.

Investigators also recommended that the FAA and other regulators carry out a safety review of lithium-battery powered transmitters in other types of aircrafts.

Agenda Calendar Updates, Makes Managing Your Calendar Easier than Ever

iOS: Agenda Calendar, one of our favorite iPhone calendar apps, just unveiled a new version that boasts a new interface, minimal (but useful) calendar views, and new event editing options. Each of the new views is clean, but they all show you tons of useful information at a glance.

If you're looking for a calendar app that shows you a wealth of information in a single view without tons of colorful bars and blocks all over the screen, Agenda Calendar is for you. You can see how the new version works in the video above, but the layout is designed to offer both a one-handed "agenda" style view of your upcoming appointments with a quick fly-out view of event details that you can tap to see quickly. The new "split" view lets you see your full monthly calendar at the top with colored dots that indicate the density of appointments on any given day, and at the bottom you can see the specific appointments for any day you select in an endlessly scrolling list.

One of Agenda's previous drawbacks was that while it was great for checking your calendar and reviewing your appointments, adding new events wasn't its strong suit. The new version fixes many of those issues. Adding new appointments is easy, and you can either use the quick add tool to get something on your calendar in seconds, or expand it out to the full tool with custom recurrence options, alerts, durations, and attendees. Agenda can even send email or SMS to your attendees to remind them of your event, and seamlessly synchronizes with any other calendars on your device (iOS, Google Calendar, Exchange, etc) so you don't have to import or sync anything.

Finally, Agenda Calendar also integrates nicely with other apps on your phone. If you use Fantastical, for example?our favorite calendar app for iPhone?you can use its event creation engine to add events to Agenda as well. You can send to-dos and reminders to iOS Reminders, Clear, Due, Omnifocus, and more. Hit the link below to read more about the new version, and to give it a try. Agenda is also available for Android, although the latest features haven't made their way over yet.

As Congress debates food stamp cuts, moms fret about feeding kids

Economy

Gracie Shannon-Sanborn, 5, holds a sign as she joins her father Allen Sanborn (L) and members of Progressive Democrats of America and other activists as they hold a rally in front of Rep. Henry Waxman's office on June 17, 2013 in Los Angeles, California.

For one in seven Americans, the federal government?s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, aka food stamps, is all that stands between them and too little food.

But the complicated calculus of financial survival for the working poor also means any cuts to the roughly $80 billion SNAP, as it?s known, being considered by Congress would be felt well beyond the grocery checkout line. Buying new school clothes, family outings, even getting a toehold in the financial mainstream could be thrown into limbo.

For many of the working poor, wages just don?t go far enough. The National Employment Law project says nearly 60 percent of jobs created in the post-recession recovery pay $13.83 or less an hour, and hourly wages for some low-wage occupations fell by more than 5 percent in just three years.

Food service and temporary employment make up 43 percent of the post-recession job growth, according to NELP policy analyst Jack Temple. "They overwhelmingly pay low wages,? Temple said. ?For that lower segment, you?re going to see increased use of safety net programs to make up the difference."

Sharonton Taylor of Marietta, Ga., is a single mom of three, even working full-time and earning $9.50 an hour as a certified nurse's aide qualifies her for $500 a month in food stamps. (Like Medicaid, SNAP is federally funded but administered at the state level.) That?s still about $150 less than the U.S.D.A.'s average monthly estimate of what a ?low-cost food plan? should cost for Taylor?s family.

If that $500 were cut, Taylor wouldn?t be able to buy new clothes for her daughter and two sons, or take them on the kind of outings middle-class kids take for granted. ?We?d play Uno or do something around the house, try to make it fun for them, instead of going to the zoo, to the aquarium, stuff like that,? she said.

Taylor said it?s hard trying to explain to her kids, who are eight, five and four, about the family?s dire financial straits. ?I have to tell them, ?Mom don?t have it right now. Don?t you want a roof over your head??... I have to keep telling them that.?

Buying less food
The next step would be simply buying less food, she said. As it is, Taylor says she often struggles to make it until the 9th day of each month, when her SNAP card is refilled. ?I?ll try to make the food last? It feels hard to stretch, especially if you cook everyday. I get low at the end of the month and I have another week to go.? During that week, cheap, filling staples like spaghetti fill the gap.

?As finances get worse, the dietary quality also gets worse,? warned Dr. Deborah Frank, founder and principal investigator of Children's HealthWatch at the Boston University-affiliated Boston Medical Center. ?Poor nutrition isn?t obvious to the lay person,? she said. ?This is a health problem. I think that?s the connection that people miss.?

But there are sharp disagreements in Washington about how to fix the system. Proponents of cutting SNAP funding say the program is bloated, poorly managed and subject to abuse.

"There are 21 programs that provide food-purchasing assistance at the federal level. Isolating SNAP is distorting the debate," said Michael Tanner, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute. " We spend too much on the social welfare safety net for too little gain."

Calling SNAP "the fastest-growing welfare program that we have," Tanner said even cuts of nearly $21 billion over the next 10 years proposed by the Republican-led House of Representatives don't go far enough.

Kevin Concannon, undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, countered that the program?s growth was a necessary response to the recession and unemployment it produced. ?Most of the increase in SNAP is attributable to the depth and severity of the economic downturn,? he said.

Anti-hunger advocates say the program has become a political football. ?A lot of the racial and gender and other cultural politics of the country play out through the food stamp program,? said Jim Weill, president of the Food Research and Action Center. ?They shouldn?t, but they do.?

On Thursday, the House voted to decouple food stamps from a five-year farm bill, setting the stage for a battle with the Democratic-led Senate and the White House. But whichever party wins, the real losers will be families who have benefits cut or eliminated, said Lisa Davis, senior vice president of government relations at nonprofit Feeding America.

Other proposed changes to SNAP would have longer-term ramifications for people struggling to lift their families out of poverty.

Juggling jobs
Krystal Cole juggles two jobs in pursuit of that goal. A single mother of two in Marietta, Ga., Cole works Monday through Friday in an on-the-job training internship that pays roughly minimum wage for 20 of the 40 hours she works. On weekends, she works as a waitress for two seven-hour shifts at a waffle restaurant. Nearly all of that paycheck goes toward her health insurance; virtually her only take-home pay on weekends is the roughly $100 she pulls down in tips.

"I work hard but I still don?t make enough money," Cole said. "Food is expensive, and you don't really realize it until you have all these mouths to feed." Cole gets $160 a month in SNAP benefits, and estimates that she pays another $100 or so out of pocket each month (her kids are in programs that give them breakfast and lunch on weekdays).

In one sense, though, Cole is lucky. Feeding America says the average SNAP household has only $333 in assets. The Center for Family Resources in Marietta helped Cole set up a savings account about a year and a half ago and taught her the importance of budgeting and saving. She's been socking away a little bit ? $20 here, $50 there on a good week ? ever since.

Currently, the government lets states lift a $2,000 asset cap on SNAP participation so families aren?t forced to wipe out their savings before becoming eligible. But changes proposed under the House?s original farm bill would take away that option. If Cole?s eligibility for food stamps were at risk because of her small nest egg, she would face a difficult decision: benefits now, or a more secure financial future.

Farm bill aside, food stamp benefits are going to drop by an average of $20 to $25 per family in November anyway when a stimulus increase expires, Davis said. The U.S.D.A. estimated that last year's drought will make food prices rise up to 3.5 percent over the course of the year.

Families are already feeling the pinch. ?I?m barely making it, even with the program,? said Michelle Tyson, a school bus aide and single mother to three teenaged boys in Buffalo, N.Y., who gets nearly $400 a month in food stamps despite working 30 hours a week and taking every extra shift that comes her way.

If her benefits were cut back, ?There would be no more cookies or chips, I tell you that. I don't buy a lot of it, but I buy enough that it could be cut back.? Next, Tyson said she would start rationing. ?I would cut out portions? It's no fun not being able to eat what you want to eat or not having any food in the house,? she said.

Old-School Apple 1 Fetches $387K at Auction

Apple 1 Motherboard

How much would you pay for one of the first computers ever made by Apple founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak? For one lucky bidder with deep pockets, the chance to get a piece of tech history came with a six-figure price tag.

A working Apple 1 computer from 1976 fetched $387,750 in an online auction Tuesday held by Christie's, according to reports. Believe it or not, the winning bid was actually much lower than expected.

Before the auction began on June 24, Christie's estimated it would go for up to $500,000. That estimate was modest considering that just last month, another working Apple 1 sold for a record $671,000 at an auction in Germany, surpassing the previous record of $640,000 set by the same auction house in November. Before that, Sotheby's in New York sold one for $374,500.

The model sold this week as part of Christie's "First Bytes: Iconic Technology from the Twentieth Century" auction included an original, working Apple motherboard (like the one pictured above), as well as a keyboard, monitor, and storage device that were added later. There's no word as to who bought the vintage machine.

There were only 200 Apple 1 computers ever made and today there are only around 46 known units in existence, with just a half-dozen in working condition. They originally sold for $666.66.

Other items in the action didn't fare so well. An Apple Lisa computer from 1984 was predicted to bring in up to $30,000, while a prototype Apple IIGS computer from 1986 was expected to go for as high as $15,000. Neither of those items met the reserve price, so they were not sold, according to Forbes.

EASA says too early to say if Dreamliners could be grounded

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - The European Aviation Safety Agency said on Friday it was too early to say whether Boeing's 787 Dreamliner could be grounded again following a fire aboard an aircraft at London's Heathrow airport.

"Boeing staff will investigate and we will follow closely to see what to decide," a spokesman for the agency said.

It did not have any information on whether the fire was linked to the battery problem that resulted in the grounding of Dreamliners earlier this year.

The Federal Aviation Administration is responsible for any decision on whether to ground the fleet although EASA does have jurisdiction over European airlines operating the plane.

Florida police chief ready for Zimmerman verdict

By Daniel Trotta

SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) - In a once-segregated Southern town where a shooting death last year ignited a dispute that polarized America, the new police chief has embraced a simple tactic. He calls it the "walk and talk."

Unprecedented in Sanford, where George Zimmerman is on trial for killing teenager Trayvon Martin, the campaign has led Cecil Smith out of the police station and into a historic black neighborhood nearby. There, the Northerner from a Chicago suburb has knocked on doors and talked with people about their concerns.

Barely 100 days into the job, Smith has also moved beyond the neighborhood known as Goldsboro and into white, Hispanic and mixed neighborhoods. He has ordered his 130 officers to get out of their cruisers and engage the public. They hand out business cards with their cell phone numbers.

By reaching out, Smith, who is black, says he has set himself apart from his predecessors, one of whom stepped down after his handling of the shooting enflamed racial tensions in town and rekindled a national debate about race relations in the United States.

His efforts could be put to the test in the coming days, with a six-woman jury soon to begin deliberations on a verdict for Zimmerman, who is accused of second-degree murder for shooting Martin. Zimmerman, who is white and Hispanic, was armed, and Martin, 17-years old and black, was unarmed.

The defense rested its case on Wednesday, and the judge said the jury would begin deliberations on Friday afternoon.

Even though Smith's police force has put measures in place ahead of the verdict, the chief said he expects calm on the streets of Sanford, in central Florida, where protests broke out after the shooting last year and soon spread across the country.

"Right now I'm expecting nothing," Smith told Reuters from the same police station where investigators interrogated Zimmerman the night of February 26, 2012 after he had shot and killed Martin in what he said was self-defense.

"People are not feeling or hearing anything out there in the community, there's no chatter out there about anything taking place and in some cases there's more of a spin-up on the media side with regards to there being some issues of concern," Smith said.

Still, with many legal commentators saying the prosecution's case appeared weak, officials are preparing for any uproar that could follow if Zimmerman is acquitted.

Sanford police, in conjunction with some county sheriff's departments, have put together a plan to "ensure the safety of the cities" after a verdict, Smith said. He declined to reveal any details.

While Smith said the town has moved past the outrage that surrounded the case a year ago, reminders of the emotional outpouring that followed the shooting remain. At a shrine to Martin in Sanford that is fashioned out of railway cross-ties and concrete blocks, a banner reads, "Justice in Sanford, Florida - Now is the Time!"

"You can feel the tension," said Francis Oliver, a black activist. "The Zimmerman case has split this town down the middle."

Among some of the black community leaders, there is also concern that the jury in the Zimmerman murder trial consisted of five white women, and one woman who is Hispanic of mixed race. Sanford, a town of 54,000, is 30 percent black.

"We wonder, could they really see things out of our eyes, our perspective?" said Cindy Philemon, who helps run a welcome center in the Goldsboro neighborhood. "Our young people are in danger of being profiled and killed out of suspicion."

Smith said he has yet to encounter racism in Sanford, failing to detect a trace of it even when he is out in civilian clothes with his wife, who is white.

When one of his predecessors, Billy Ray Lee Jr., who is white, decided against arresting Zimmerman, angry demonstrations took place right outside the police station. African-American community leaders complained racial profiling led Zimmerman to target Martin as suspicious, and that a police force with a record of inflaming the black community too easily accepted Zimmerman's story.

When those demonstrations grew more intense and spread across the country, Lee stepped down. Protesters demanded an arrest, which came 45 days after the shooting when a special prosecutor charged Zimmerman.

Turner Clayton, the local leader of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), agreed with Smith in expecting calm after any verdict, even if it is for acquittal, largely because the main demands of the demonstrators have been met.

Like many towns in the South, Sanford has a long history of racial strife, including one involving Jackie Robinson, who overcame segregation to become the first African American to play in Major League Baseball in 1947. While still in the minor leagues, Robinson was due to play a game in Sanford, but the local police chief escorted him off the field, according to Chris Lamb, author of "Blackout: The Untold Story of Jackie Robinson's First Spring Training."

Into this town stepped Smith, 52, after having spent 25 years with the police department in the Chicago suburb of Elgin, where he was deputy police chief. On April 1, Smith became the seventh Sanford police chief in five years, including two interim chiefs and two acting chiefs.

Rather than being embraced by Sanford blacks, Smith said he was met with distrust because he came from the north.

"You don't understand us Southerners because you're a northerner," Smith said he was told. "There's a whole, gray, weird kind of era that's taken place in this community where there's all kinds of separations, not just between black and white but within the black community."

Smith's rejoinder has often been a variation of "Dude, I'm from Chicago," meaning he has experience in a rough-and-tumble world.

Clayton, president of the Seminole County NAACP, said he appreciated what Smith was doing but cautioned it would take time for results.

"I know he's knocking on doors, trying to get the trust of the community again," Clayton said. "It's not going to happen overnight."

My secret shame: I can't stop playing Happy Street

My secret shame: I can't stop playing Happy Street

I'm not sure when my wife introduced me to Godzi Lab's game Happy Street, but I've rued the day many times since then. It is the most bizarrely addictive game I've come across, and I can't explain why. It's silly, it's a bit stupid, and it's very simple. Maybe those are reasons enough to love it.

Happy Street made its debut almost a year ago for iOS and Android, and it's also available as a Mac game from the Mac App Store. It's a city-building game in which you help Billy, an anthropomorphic fox, create a thriving metropolis populated with plenty of other animal friends. The game is rendered entirely in 2D - there's no 3D stuff to worry about. You're given quests to complete, and crafting items is a key part of the game play.

Happy Street - Pepin

It's also free to play, which certainly explains part of Happy Street's appeal. The key to building certain structures and expanding your territory is the collection of gems, called Flooz, which you can either earn through gameplay, through social connections with other players, or by purchasing outright.

But Godzi Lab has done it right - while you can purchase Flooz, and it will make it easier for you to play especially in later stages, it isn't strictly necessary to buy Flooz.

Happy Street - Zoe

What brings me back to Happy Street over and over again is that I've actually begun to care about the characters in the game. There's scheming Pepin, a wolf who regularly comes to you to ask you to craft him items, for which he'll pay well above market value and sometimes throw in a Flooz too. Sometimes I wonder just what the heck Pepin is up to, when he asks for fertilizer one minute and an oven the next. There's Zoe, an adorable cat with a spunky attitude and a silly sense of humor who has a crush on Billy. Will Billy and Zoe ever get together? There's Nyok, the ursine resident of a nearby forest who cooks and crafts items that you need (he's in love with Dahlia, one of Billy's roommates). There's Sopica, the flighty artist who lives on a nearby mountainside, who also helps you craft items made from the stones found in those hills.

Soon you find your Happy Street populated with dozens of characters - not all of them are fleshed out as the special characters, but they still have wants, needs and desires that you need to cater to. This is one of the many challenges of Happy Street - you have to build a city that provides them with everything they need - from places to eat to places to buy things and places to play. You need to make sure the shops, stores and venues are well-stocked (you simply click on them once they're empty to replenish their inventory). In a clever bit of cross-promotion, Godzi Lab has created arcade games you can buy to entertain your Happy Street residents that play iBlast Moki and Stardunk, two other games this mobile game developer produces.

Happy Street - Social

Happy Street has a very strong social component. You are encouraged to connect with friends who play the game, either through Game Center or Facebook. Once you're connected, you can visit their streets once per day and help them maintain their shops' inventories; do so and you're rewarded with a few extra Flooz and some coins, which can be used to buy different kinds of buildings or expand your city limits.

I have some friends who have been playing avidly for a very long time, and they've made their way up to level 40 or better. Others are far behind. Some have stopped playing all together, but I don't mind too much, because their cities remain online and connected, so I can visit them and get Flooz and cash.

Godzi Lab has also continuously updated Happy Street with added content. It regularly offers seasonally-themed items; I have places on my street dedicated to Chinese New Year, Christmas, Easter and St. Patrick's Day, and now I'm saving enough Flooz to outfit my street with some summer beach scenes.

So why am I ashamed by my addiction?

Happy Street - Nyok

For one thing, Happy Street looks ridiculous. I've caught sight of a few people looking at my iPad when I play it. It just appears unseemly for a man in his mid-40s to be playing a cartoonish-looking game with foxes, wolves and cats walking around in human clothing when he should be - I don't know, reading sports scores or checking the stock market or something.

For another, I've been a vocal critic of the free-to-play revenue model. (iMore and Mobile Nations has devoted a lot to this issue - check out Rene's thoughts, this iMore show and the Talk Mobile feature, for example.) I think many developers go overboard with In-App Purchases to rake in revenue from addicted players. And many have implemented systems that so fundamentally change or corrupt gameplay that it's impossible to win or even get very far without spending money. Sometimes lots of money. I think that's wrong. But as I point out, Godzi Lab has very carefully toed the line by not falling into this trap.

There's also an element of peer pressure. While I've surpassed many of my friends, some of my Happy Street friends have blown by me. As has my wife. I'm trying desperately to catch up to them. I have trouble admitting just how bothered I am by the fact that others are doing better at Happy Street than me.

I haven't gotten caught up in other casual mobile game phenomena like Candy Crush Saga, which has gripped some of my coworkers with an almost heroin-like addiction, but I've had a long-term love affair with Happy Street. It's almost always among the most frequently-used apps on my iPad.

In the end, I have to offer Godzi Lab a tip of the hat. And for as long as they update the game with new content and don't mess with the balance too much, I'll probably keep playing Happy Street indefinitely. Even if I have trouble admitting it.
